The new 2001 Surf City point system
In past years we used tables of points to calculate overall standings. They
went 30 deep in the open classes, and 20 deep in the women, masters and
junior groups.
We have changed to an entirely new system this year, to help improve three
things:
- we want to rank all competitors in the overall results, not just
those who finish in the top 20 or 30.
- classes with very small fields did not fit very into a schedule with 20 places - there was too much of a premium on showing up, compared to the actual race placings
- riders who missed one event were at a huge disadvantage, whether due to illness, competing in the SuperCup, etc.
The new system works as follows:
RACE POINTS:
For each race we calculate points thus:
- one point for finishing and one point for everybody you beat;
- two bonus points to first place, one bonus point to second place.
For example:
| field |
points for
first->last |
| 1 |
3 |
| 2 |
4,2
|
| 3 |
5,3,1 |
| 4 |
6,4,2,1 |
| 5 |
7,5,3,2,1 |
Note that we will use the number of finishers, not starters. There is a
practical reason for this: we are frequently off in our count of starters
owing to reg errors or omissions (season pass holders don't check in, riders
are put in the wrong category etc.).
Overall points are calculated by using the points from the series final
race, and the three highest point scores from the other four races. This
means that we will not count a riders lowest scoring event. This is exactly
the way that Norba NCS points are calculated.
