The 2002 Surf City point system
We've modified the points system that we used last year and have made a few changes:
  • All races will count toward the final standings.
  • All races for a particular class will have the same weight.
  • The bonuses for top placings have increased, and they are deeper and greater for the three groups with much fields: Sr A, Sr B and Men 35+A

We would like to have all or virtually all finishers get series points each week, but we wanted the number of places earning points to be in proportion to the field sizes. To do this, we observed the number of finishers in the first two races and then chose a number for each class that would cover all the finishers and allow for normal increases if turnout grew.

There was quite a bit of discussion last year about having greater bonuses to the top placings. One problem is that what works for large fields may not work for smaller fields. We divided the fields into two groups. The first group, comprising Sr A, Sr B and Men 35+(A) typically have 40-80 finishers. Those groups have bonuses to the top 6 finishers, and the amount of the bonus is a bit greater. The other groups generally have 10-30 finishers; they have bonuses 4 deep, slightly more than last year.

Overall points are just the total of the points from all the races. Ties will be broken by placings in the series final.
